Porto Cervo 3^rd Challenge and Finale

PORTO CERVO located in north-eastern Sardinia (better known as Gallura) is the main centre on the Costa Smeralda. It was set up back to the 1960s when Prince Karim Aga Khan IV (Imam of the Ismaili Muslims) yielded to the beauty of this stretch of the Italian coast and acquired the area. Together with some leading architects of the time (including Luigi Vietti, Michele Busiri Vici, Jacques and Savin Couelle) he decided to create the paradise of international elite tourism that has now become renowned worldwide. The place is a summer kingdom of the fashionable Italian and international set, elegant and refined, with discrete and well-blended architecture. It figures as a cinema set where shapes, lighting and colours combine to reproduce an idealized Mediterranean village that melts perfectly into the wilder natural ambience in a scenario with unique suggestions, an exclusive “designer village” with boutiques, luxury restaurants and hotels, all framed by mega-yachts moored in the crystalline waters of the Old Port and the new marina.

The course of the PEVERO GOLF CLUB was designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1972, and fits in harmoniously with the Mediterranean brush scented with arbutus, broom, juniper and myrtle, among rocks and natural lakelets. It is considered to be one of the fifty most beautiful in the world, both for its spectacular character and for the unforgettable views it offers. Situated between the bay of the exclusive Cala di Volpe hotel and the Gulf of Pevero, the course is appreciated not only for its beauty but also for its technical quality; and over the years it has kept its reputation as one of the most insidious in the world. Trent Jones had no need to insert artificial obstacles, he found them all there on the spot: wind, woodland areas, rocky formations: a testing course even for the most expert player. The Club House, in full harmony with the magnificent natural setting, was designed by architect Riccardo Bonicatti.
